Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman is the third daughter of their family. She was only a young teenager when her father who was employed as an carnival barker, died. Her mother was forced to perform tasks including waitressing and cleaning. Ruth attended the school in Boston's poorest tenement area. But she quit school only after two years in order to pursue an acting career.
